Bastards tryin' to keep me down

Man, the blog spam is insane - I think I got 3000 new ones since my last update. Ugh. Worse yet, I have to individually set each entry to not allow comments. That's insane. Whatever.

I'm taking squash lessons once a week, because I want to get better. In between each lesson, I'm getting more and more frustrated. I know exactly how I want to play. I know the shots I want to make, and I know where I want to place the ball. The trouble is that my skill is not yet where my head is. So I get a shot coming to me, plan where to place the return, and then shoot the ball straight to my opponent. It's driving me nuts. It's just a matter of time, but nevertheless, it requires a lot of patience.

So now I'm sitting in sweats, watching Seinfeld, and writing a blog entry. That's actually pretty awesome, because for some reason I don't normally seem to have any spare time. Now I'm playing squash on a daily basis, doing a lot of reading, and still managing to find some spare time. Not being in school is some kind of sweet.

I've recently got a ton of new books on my list to read - For the last while I've been reading eBooks on my palm pilot, reading whatever I could find, which has led to some weird titles: The art of fighting without fighting, Unlocking the powers of your mind (related to discovering your psychic potential), and Sun Tzu's The Art of War. I've read some really good books too, a couple by Ayn Rand that I liked a lot, and some others. By the way, to those who care, Sun Tzu's book is translated, with interpretations from about five different authors. It didn't really do much for me. The books I'm looking to read are mostly related to multi-dimensional space, and stories based around them. I really enjoyed Flatland, both as a social commentary for its time (1800s), and as an analogy to help us understand the higher dimensions. It turns out there are at least a couple more books along the same lines, so I'm going to readthem, and become smarter. I will then use my increased brain size as a weapon in the local pitfights.

That's quite enough for now - I'm tired, and need to relax.

Whoa, update

Uhhhhhhhh, what? I'm updating again? Looks like.. It's been about four months since I last updated, maybe more than that. I'm really not sure. I haven't been keeping track, obviously.

The real reason I haven't updated for so long is twofold. A) I haven't had the time to write out a massive epic funny post. These are obviously my favorite posts, mostly because I enjoy reading back over them once in a while - they make me laugh. Annnnnnd B) I haven't really had anything worthwhile to write about. Standard blog entries are boring to me - reading back over them provides me zero entertainment... For someone other than myself, it might be interesting to read, so maybe that's the saving grace. Who knows.

Anyhow, I've been pretty crazy busy lately - I joined Victoria Squash Club, because for the first time in ever, I've found a hobby that I'm able to stick with, rather than losing interest in three months and moving on to something else. No doubt having said this, I'll give it up in a few months, but in the meantime, I'll pretend that won't be the case.

I played a couple of rounds with the club pro when I first signed up, and he kicked my ass all over the court. It turns out I've been holding my racquet wrong this entire time, which essentially means that I have to relearn the basics right from the start. I can remember when I was helping people start out dancing, I would beat into their brain that the most important thing to learn was the foundation. If you develop bad habits with your foundation, the entire rest of your learning will be flawed. Looks like I blew my own cardinal rule. That being said, learning the proper grip now opens the door to actually being able to play properly, and, I'm hoping, improvements in my game. After all, playing a sport isn't fun if you don't improve, at least for myself. Staying at the same skill level without any improvement is boring, and a little disheartening. Part of the joy in any activity is seeing the practice and time (not to mention blood and sweat) that you've put in come back out in your game.

Aside from squash, I've been playing magic, on and off, but lately both Graham and Adam have kind of gotten sick of the game, and I am hovering. The game comes and goes for me, I think mostly because the introduction of new sets and game mechanics are what keeps it interesting. Once I've figured out all the fun things I want to do with those mechanics, the games starts to get a little boring. Then the next set comes out, and it's fun again.

Magic has sort of given away to a new card game for me, at least right now - that game is Poker. I've only played once, but I like what I've seen. I've always really liked watching the World Poker Tour on TV - I don't know why. Until recently, when I've started paying more attention to the intricacies, I've just kind of watched without knowing why. Again, the long-term appeal of the game is completely dependant on my ability to improve. If I don't get better at it, I'm not going to keep playing, especially since it's ten dollars every night that we play.

Work's keeping me busy, and the job is still rad (That's right assclowns, I used the word RAD). Everyone I work with is cool, and the work is challenging and varied. Since starting to work there, I've learned at least five languages, most of which I had had no exposure to prior to be hired. I went for beers with everyone from work on Friday, and had a blast with them at the new Irish pub. If anyone reading this hasn't been yet, it's definitely worth the look. I think that the demise of the Elephant and Castle is iminent now that Irish Times has moved in kitty-corner to them. The E & C are only now trying to really push a british image, and have cranked their prices up - you can't even buy a pitcher of beer there now, they just charge you for three pints - no discounted rate. Really, I think that if they wanted to make the intelligent marketing move, they would promote themselves as an equally authentic (or only slightly less) pub, but with lower prices. If I had to choose between the two places, and they were both in the same price bracket (as they are now), there's just no way you'd find me at the E & C, tradition (and men's club) aside.

That's enough of an entry for tonight, hopefully we can keep the train rolling and churn out some meaningless blog entries in the near future.

Oh, lastly, I've had to cut out comments - I've got like 4000 comments in this blog, and roughly 50 of them are legitimate. Not only that, by I did a full wipe less than two weeks ago. I have a blog spam blacklist program set up, but it requires me to run and update it constantly, and even then doesn't catch all of these bastards. This sucks, because my favorite all time blog post was one that resulted from some stupid person posting a comment begging to be ripped apart. I'll miss those days, but hopefully people that don't like me will somehow get a hold of my e-mail address, and we can all laugh at them for being inferior to us.
