One of the most effective means of self-sabotage I come up against when developing leadership is the conversation that something is just "not my style of leadership".

Because leadership is about expanding your existing range, and because your existing range is where you are comfortable, you have a natural pull towards defending, and remaining in, the world you already know. That world includes all of the ways of being, and the actions to take, that you are already comfortable with.

If you're comfortable being overly generous, but have a story that it is morally wrong and never acceptable to act in a way that might occur selfishly, then "your style of leadership" allows for your generosity as a leader, but not your selfishness.

Your "style of leadership" is really just what you've grown comfortable with.

This fundamentally misses the point of leadership. Leadership is developing your ability to access and embody /all/ ways of being, and /all/ actions. The leader who can be and do whatever is called for to create the committed result, is the leader that has the greatest impact.

"Not my style of leadership" provides someone a get out of jail free card.

Growth vs. Transformation

Imagine a pie chart with two different colours.

The first colour is blue, and it is a nice, forty-five degree slice of pie. If degrees aren't your jam, you can imagine that the blue wedge takes up about one sixth of the total size of the pie.

The rest of the pie is red.

The blue slice of the pie represents the range inside of which you are currently comfortable operating in life. All of your rules for living life, all of the beliefs you have about what is and is not acceptable, all of the things you know how to do, are willing to do and are capable of doing are contained inside this blue pie wedge.

The blue pie wedge also contains all of the stuff you don't yet know how to do, but you know about it, and you know what you'd need to do in order to achieve it. Most importantly, even if you're not yet competent in doing this stuff, you'd be /willing/ to do it if you felt enough reason to.

You may not know yet how to drive heavy machinery, but that's inside of the range of possibility your blue pie wedge encompasses. You'd go to school, learn how to do it, and then boom, you're done.

The rest of the pie, coloured red, is /everything else/ that is possible in life.

"Who you are is Connection"

I was trying to remind myself of the truth that had been reflected to me when I took on the practise of asking people what I brought into the space. People had shared that I brought everyone together. The whole room became more connected when I was a part of it.

But I didn't usually feel like connection. I felt shy. I felt like an ambivert — a contorted attempt to combine both introversion and extroversion into a satisfying description of myself. I felt like ignoring people, hiding away, and finding ways to take comfort in the lack of connection that was often more present in my life.

I was trying to remind myself of who I was, or at least, got to be, while waiting at the bus stop.

Ben and someone else were standing about ten feet away from me, waiting for the same bus I was, chatting with each other and laughing. I knew Ben vaguely from a stint I'd done at the free legal clinic. We didn't really know each other, we just went to the same law school, and had interacted once.

And here I was standing off to the side, putting a lot of my attention into my phone.

If I *was* Connection, why was I avoiding it so much?

Ugh.

I was avoiding it because I was scared. Nervous I'd be an imposition, not wanting to interrupt into a conversation, not wanting to be some dork that injected himself.

The Pendulum

I was getting interviewed on the Adventure Effect podcast the other day, and we got onto the topic of pendulums.

From a physics standpoint, I always found it interesting that a pendulum represents an energetic system in a state of balance. Even if the pendulum swings wildly out to one side, it will compensate and inevitably find its way back to the other side.

Newton's third law says that every force has an equal and opposite counter-force. My physics teacher in high school, Mr. Hannay, illustrated this law using the example of three sumo wrestlers inside a spaceship, running full-force and slamming into the front wall of the spaceship to propel it forward. The problem is that for them to get up to speed and hit that wall, they have to push off of the floor of the spaceship with their feet, and that is going to propel the spaceship backward in equal and opposite counter-measure to the amount they push it forward when they hit the wall.

This is the main reason we don't have sumo-wrestler-powered rocket-ships.

(Side note: I got into trouble with Mr. Hannay for scratching the words "GWAR RULES" into my desk at the back of the class. Before he'd graduate me, he required that I go and buy some sandpaper and verathane, and restore the desk. Newton's third law in action!)

Having said all that, if you imagine yourself sitting on a swing set (a classic pendulum), you already know that, without touching the ground, you can accelerate yourself forward simply by rocking in the swing. You'll get a nice high back-and-forth action going on.

Your resistance takes one of two primary forms: active and passive.

Active resistance is easier to identify. It's the stuff you do that deliberately avoids whatever you have resistance to. Procrastinating is usually the most obvious one, but there's also sitting and staring at your computer screen and refusing to take the action (frozen with fear), making excuses for why you can't just hit "Go Live" or "Publish", and so on.

Passive resistance is sneakier. Passive resistance encompasses all the ways you allow "life" to get in the way of what you say you're committed to. If I say I want to meet the woman of my dreams, but after a month, I've simply been too busy to make time for dates, that's my passive resistance showing up.

Passive resistance is a function of the fact that your life currently has just enough room for everything that is already present, and little else. We don't assemble our lives with vast swaths of empty space, waiting to be filled with that extra stuff we only just realized is important to us. And we certainly don't create our budgets with large savings specifically set aside to invest in that thing we might realize we want a year from now.

Passive resistance is usually centered around time and money. You have enough time and money for the life you are already leading, and maybe a little incremental growth around the edges. The big swings out into the possibility of your life? You'll take those on when you've got more time and/or money available, and conveniently (at least as far as not having to confront what you are resistant to/afraid of), that point will always be just over the horizon.
